Join multiple Archibald Portrait Prize finalist David Fenoglio for a two-day portrait painting workshop. The workshop will focus on natural and realistic representation of the live model in oils. Limited to 8 places.

An alla prima approach will be demonstrated, from lighting the model, blocking in shapes, proportion, anatomy, design, value/colour relationships, colour mixing and paint handling. Foundational principles will be discussed while demonstrating a variety of technical approaches.

Day one will focus on anatomy and proportion with students creating a block-in drawing and one short alla prima painting from the live model.

Day two will focus on modelling form, colour mixing and paint application with students creating one longer alla prima painting from a live model.

What you can expect to learn: You will learn practical applications in oil painting for creating portrait paintings from life. Principles will be discussed and demonstrated through practical application. Students will apply these principles and approaches by observing and painting the live model. Content includes portrait anatomy, gesture of the head and shoulders, modelling form, colour mixing, palette organisation and paint application. I will also discuss how these alla prima paintings can be used as studies for larger or more time intensive portrait paintings.

Who is this for: This workshop is for anyone interested in diving deep into portrait painting. Painters wanting direct experience painting the portrait fro life. Whether you are a beginner or more experienced painter you will benefit from this workshop. Some drawing and oil painting experience is recommended.

Materials are not provided. A thorough materials list will be emailed upon ticket purchase. You can order handmade painting panels on Learn page. I will be painting and demonstrating on the same panels.

Colours:With oil painting, there really is no limit to the variety of colours you could use. I tend to work with a limited variety of tube colours. I will email some suggested combinations, but you can probably just bring what you have. You should use artist quality paint with minimal additives. Suitable brands include Old Holland, Michael Harding, Langridge, Windsor + Newton, Gamblin, Art Spectrum.

Brushes: Bring a variety of brush sizes, bristle types and shapes. I usually use a combination of sable rounds and hog bristle filberts, sometimes flats. The principles taught can be applied with any combination of brushes.

Palette: A non-absorbent surface to mix paint on. A neutral tone on the palette will assist with perceiving mixtures accurately.
